Pulling Beastmen Pets Without Bringing the Owner

Back to Search

Classic Level 75 Era & HorizonXI

The idea here is to kill the beastman's pet, not the beastman. The pet usually has less HP than a normal mob of the same level but still gives normal XP. The owner is the dangerous part. You'll want a safe way to pull the pet away and somewhere to recover before doing it again.

Make Sure You Found the Right Owner

Look for the owner named in the guide and make sure you're in the right zone. A Goblin's Bee listing can include pets from several different owners. That means the lowest listed level won't apply to every bee there. Use the level range for the owner you found, then check the pet before attacking.

The owner is often much stronger than its pet. If the pet's map comes from its owner, it shows the owner's general area, not an exact pet position or a guaranteed safe camp. Set Up a Safe Pull

  1. Watch the owner first

Take a moment to watch where the owner walks and how the pet follows it. If the owner aggros by sight, wait until it's facing away from both the pet and your pulling spot. If you can't see the owner clearly, wait. Don't assume it stopped moving just because you lost sight of it.FFXIclopedia: Monster pet mechanics

  2. Check what is between you and the pet

Look for other beastmen and normal mobs from the pet's family. Pets can link with those mobs too. Check that the path won't take the pet back past its owner. Waiting for the owner to face away won't solve sound aggro or special cases where the owner and pet share hate.FFXIclopedia: Monster pet mechanics · HorizonXI Wiki: Monster pets

  3. Take your time with the first pull

Recover your HP/MP before pulling. Have a finishing attack ready if your opener isn't enough. Use a single-target pull near the owner, and get one clean kill before worrying about chains. Check what else an area spell could hit before using it to finish.

  4. Check how the pull went

Did the pet come alone? Did you have enough damage to finish it? Was your way out still clear? A safe pull from one spot doesn't mean the next one will be safe after the owner moves. Wait for another good opening instead of trying to beat it to the turn.

Have a Backup if the Kill Doesn't Go as Planned

If you're casting, keep enough MP for another spell and a way to control the pet if needed. If you're using melee or ranged attacks, be ready for a miss or a pet that survives longer than expected. Most of these level ranges come from caster guides. Low HP doesn't mean every job can use the same method.HorizonXI Wiki: Black Mage solo camp reports

If you're relying on Utsusemi, check your displayed /NIN level and bring the right tools. Having NIN leveled as a main job won't let you use a spell before your support level is high enough. Shadows, healing and control spells can help, but they don't make bringing the owner a good idea.

Know where you'll go if something goes wrong, and stop pulling if the owner joins the fight. Don't skip the safe setup just because someone else said they could one-shot the pet. Your damage, gear, resists and server settings can make that same attempt go differently.HorizonXI Wiki: Black Mage solo camp reports · FFXIclopedia: Monster pet mechanics

Check Which Server the Advice Is For

HorizonXI's Black Mage guide says some of its information came from older guides and may be wrong. It also says elemental-pet recommendations were removed after server changes. Don't assume a bat or bee camp works the same way with summoned elementals, or that newer retail jobs and travel shortcuts are available on Horizon.HorizonXI Wiki: Black Mage solo camp reports

The Horizon routes use the level ranges listed for Horizon, but you'll still need to check the camp in game. Watch the owner's position, where you can safely stand, and how long it takes to summon another pet. A normal mob's listed respawn time isn't the same thing as the owner's pet summon timer.

Should You Stay or Move?

If you're getting clean pulls, recovering in time and keeping your emergency supplies for emergencies, the camp is probably doing its job. If the owner keeps stopping in a bad spot, other mobs move into your resting area, or you're spending most of your time waiting for pets, try another camp.

If XP drops after you level, look for the next pet level range and the owner that has it. Don't start fighting a stronger owner instead. Some later parts of the routes are marked as backup options, not confirmed camps for those levels. A duo, party or another solo method may be better than forcing a risky camp to last.
